Environmental Education, Sustainability and Research

The Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE) drives campus-wide environmental and sustainability education, outreach, and sustainability efforts and collaborative research initiatives. We are committed to including sustainability in everything we do.

Our faculty and students have received national recognition for projects ranging from low-carbon cement to PFAS destruction.

ISE’s successful support of our campus commitment to sustainability has resulted in many accolades, including an AASHE STARS Gold sustainability rating. Examples of our on-campus projects include food waste management, including an anaerobic digester, meadow restoration areas, and many acres of solar panels.

Our academic programs are all highly interdisciplinary and project oriented. Our new ADK Experience provides students with an opportunity to explore our region while learning field sampling, data analysis, and communication skills. Recent efforts have included eDNA in the ADKs and Microplastics in the Raquette River.

We offer sustainability-related majors, minors and research opportunities that take students out of the classroom and into the field. And campus clubs bring together students who share a passion for our planet.

Unique course options, flexible and personalized curricula, and critical hands-on experiences in a technology-rich environment combine to set our graduates apart in their chosen fields.
